To put it down simply, the main difference between a dietician and nutritionist is that a nutritionist is someone who has a degree in the field of nutrition. The degree at times could also be a doctorate degree. A dietician is someone who would have completed his required examinations and would also have an internship certificate under his belt.
The dieticians have license to work as registered dieticians and they usually have an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the relevant field. For getting the license, the dieticians would have to pass the relevant license granting exam. Nutritionists, on the other hand, are not professionals like dieticians and they do not get licensed by any board. But this does not mean that nutritionists do work illegally.
Those nutritionists who have an undergraduate degree would usually not require a license. But those nutritionists, who practice as professionals, would certainly require a license for practicing. If the professional nutritionists work without having a license, then their service could be termed as illegal. Nutritionists who do not have a professional license would usually call themselves as Diet Specialists or Dietary Educator.
A nutritionist would guide a patient on the kind of meals that he should be taking and how he should be maintaining a balanced diet. The dietician on the other hand would tackle problems like obesity and would give out diet plans which would help the person to bring down his weight and lead a better life.
Nutritionists could usually be found in government hospitals or other government-related establishments. Dieticians would usually be a part of a private set-up and would be mostly seen in private hospitals and other private medical centers. Dieticians who work individually would usually give one-to-one counseling services.
Dieticians who meet the standards set for education and training in the particular region can use titles like RDt, RD, or PDt. Dieticians are held accountable by law if patients experience any untoward effect through the diagnosis and recommendations of the dieticians. Nutritionists do not fall under any law everywhere. But some accredited nutritionists like Registered Nutritionist, Associate Nutritionists, and Public Health Nutritionists could fall under a particular jurisdiction.
Dieticians give nutrition supplements to their patients who are not able to consume natural foods. Dietary modification is a substantial part of a dietician’s course and these people are knowledgeable enough to prepare foods for their patients. Nutritionists would usually preach about healthy eating to their patients and guide them on the different foods and their nutrient contents.
It does not matter whether the nutritionist or a dietician is being approached, the patient must ensure that the credibility and the track-record of the professional is researched for and looked into. By not making such researches, people can cause more harm to themselves than any good.
